Shanghai – shàng chai – shàng hǎi
Shanghai is located on China\’s east coast facing the East China Sea and is the center of the Chinese economy. Facing the sea and located at the mouth of the mighty Yangtze River, it has one of the largest ports in the world. The port continues to hold the top spot among the world\’s largest container ports; it is home to 27 million people who suffer daily from traffic noise and air pollution.
Historic Sites
Although the city has a very diverse history, many monuments are not extant and Shanghai is not known as a monumental modern center. However, those who love old Chinatowns will definitely find something to enjoy in Yu Garden. Yu Garden is a fairly large district with restaurants, food stalls, stores, and street food, and is close to the center of Shanghai. Typical Chinese architecture, wooden paneling, and historic streets also hide an amazing network of gardens with ponds and water plants. Other attractions include the less touristy Jade Buddha Temple, which during the day offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
Modern city center
Shanghai is generally known for the urban area of Pudong with its skyscrapers and department stores. The aforementioned Yangtze River flows close to this area, attracting both tourists and locals alike to the beautiful skyline of Pudong. On the other side of the river, a waterfront area called BUND has been developed, and visitors can enjoy strolling along it. The daytime and evening lights are breathtaking. A large number of skyscrapers are lined up across the river, playing with the combination of light. Shanghai Tower and Ocean Peral Tower are considered the biggest landmarks. Shanghai Tower is the second tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and the view from its observation deck is spectacular. Ocean Pearl Tower is not the tallest building, but its spherical observation deck makes it the most interesting skyscraper in the world. From here you can also enjoy beautiful views of the city and test your fear of heights by walking on the transparent floor at that height. To easily reach both skyscrapers without taking a detour by cab, a 2 yuan (6 CZK) ferry will take you across to affluent Pudong in 10 minutes.
